Academy Welcome Night: Where the Journey Begins
The first day of the academy is in the books. The nerves are real. The expectations are clear. Twenty weeks stretches out in front of our newest recruits like a long, uphill climb.
And that evening, we gather to make sure no one starts that climb alone.
Academy Welcome Night, hosted by Local 2808, is less about formal speeches and more about connection. It’s a meet-and-greet. A handshake. A chance to exhale after day one and start building relationships that will carry these recruits through the academy and beyond.
A Conversation — Not a Lecture
Recruits are introduced to Local 2808, the union they will become part of once they successfully complete the academy and officially join the Grand Junction Fire Department.
But this night isn’t about contracts or policy deep-dives.
It’s about questions.
Anything goes.
How do I shine my boots the right way?
How do I prep my uniform every morning?
What should I expect in week five?
How do I balance family and academy life?
Veteran firefighters stand shoulder-to-shoulder with recruits, sharing practical advice and honest perspective. The goal is simple: remove uncertainty where we can and replace it with mentorship.
Because sometimes confidence starts with knowing how to lace your boots correctly on day two.
Welcoming the Families
While recruits are learning drill commands and hose loads, their families are adjusting too. That’s why families are introduced to Families Behind the Flames — a support network designed specifically to keep them connected and informed throughout the 20-week academy.
They meet other spouses, parents, and partners who understand what the next few months will look like. They’re encouraged to ask questions just like the recruits are.
What should we expect with schedules?
How can we best support them?
Who do we call if we need guidance?
Connection early prevents isolation later.
Building the Foundation
The academy will test these recruits physically and mentally. It’s meant to. The standards are high because the profession demands it.
But from the very first evening, one message is clear:
You don’t have to figure this out alone.
Welcome Night sets the tone for the culture we believe in — mentorship over ego, connection over isolation, and pride rooted in preparation.
To our newest recruits: ask the questions. Shine the boots. Show up ready.
To the families: you are part of this department too.
The work has begun — and Local 2808 is proud to walk alongside you from day one.
